Otsu was a town that developed as the economic center of Omi and Lake Biwa.
Goods from the Hokuriku region were unloaded in Otsu, and oxcarts like the one in
this illustration were used to transport them to Kyoto.
A "hashirii" is a well that provided clean water for travelers.
The hashirii on the far left still exists in the garden of Gesshinji Temple,
which was built after the tea shop.
The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hoeido-Ban) were reproduced
by Tokyo traditional woodcut craft Association
These traditional woodblock prints were reproduced exactly as the first edition
at Edo-Tokyo Museum have by many of top skilled craftsmen
like a dream team in Japan.
