Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

No.110 "Robe-Hanging Pine" at Senzoku no ike  千束の池袈裟懸松

From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

A drawing of Ota Ward's Senzoku Pond, which still remains today.

The subject of the painting, the "Kasakakematsu" (shoulder-robed pine tree),

was on the island-like protruding part.

It is said that Nichiren Shonin either sat on it or hung his robes there.

There is also a theory that the word "senzoku" originated from the fact that

Nichiren "washed his feet."

The curves of the indigo gradation on the water's surface are a testament to the

 craftsman's skill.
