From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

The island in the middle of the painting is the downstream part of the Sumida River,

and is the remains of land that was demolished due to poor water flow.

Around here, the river splits into three, and since it is the boundary

between saltwater and freshwater, it was also called "Wakare no Fuchi" (Fuchi of Parting).

It was a popular spot for viewing the moon, and was crowded

with people on summer boats.
