From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
The island in the middle of the painting is the downstream part of the Sumida River,
and is the remains of land that was demolished due to poor water flow.
Around here, the river splits into three, and since it is the boundary
between saltwater and freshwater, it was also called "Wakare no Fuchi" (Fuchi of Parting).
It was a popular spot for viewing the moon, and was crowded
with people on summer boats.
One Hundred Famous Views of Edo is a series of ukiyo-e prints
begun and largely completed by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797~1858)
