Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

No.035 Suijin Shrine and Massaki on the Sumida River  隅田川水神の森眞崎

From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

The shrine on the far right is Suijinja Shrine, said to be the guardian

deity of the Sumida River.

This was the only place that was never inundated during floods,

and it was deeply revered as a god that protects people from water and fire disasters.

This area was one of the most scenic spots in Edo, and the composition

with the cherry blossoms on the bank conveys that atmosphere well.
