#16 - Buyō Tsukuda-jima (Tsukuda Island in Musashi Province) 武陽佃島
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Tsukudajima was named after the fishermen of Tsukuda Village in Settsu Province
who relocated there after cooperating with Tokugawa Ieyasu on his ferry across
the Kanzaki River.
It refers to the area around Tsukuda in Chuo Ward today.
In the past, it was a small island in Edo Bay without a bridge,
but whitebait fishing was popular, and four-handed fishing was carried out there
every year from November to around March of the following year,
and many artists depicted this scene as a seasonal feature of Edo.
Hokusai depicts Tsukudajima as a small island in the distance, and includes
boats of various uses, creating a work that truly exudes an atmosphere of boats.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
