Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#22 - Bushū Tamagawa (Tama River in Musashi Province) 武州玉川

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Although this is the most simplified single image in the series,

it can be said to be a masterpiece with a bold composition and a sense of realism.

The screen is divided into three sections horizontally, but each section is combined into

one image, creating a natural atmosphere.

In the foreground, a man who appears to be a farmer is pulling a horse along a riverside

where there are not even any houses, creating a lonely atmosphere.

In the middle ground, a boat carrying a traveler is heading to the opposite bank,

and although the river is somewhat choppy and fast-flowing,

it appears pure and clear, expressed only with indigo shading and lines.

In contrast, in the background, beyond the mist that stretches across the screen,

the snow-capped form of Mount Fuji stands majestically.

This is truly a skillful composition of the screen.

It is difficult to tell from the screen where the painting is taking place along

the Tama River.
