Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#21 - Kanagawa oki namiura (The Great Wave off Kanagawa) 神奈川沖波裏
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Huge waves are splashing and about to break apart.
The small boat appears to be enduring the onslaught of the waves
and letting itself go with the current.
Hokusai looks as if he were on a similar boat depicting this scene,
lowering his gaze and gazing up at both the waves and Mt. Fuji,
creating a powerful sense of realism.
This is a representative painting of the three roles in the sozo series,
and is an extremely well-known painting,
but it should be noted that a similarly conceived work called
"Oshiokuri wa toutsusen no zu" was created
about 30 years before the publication of this painting.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
