Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#33 - Gaifu Kaisei (South Wind, Clear Sky) 凱風快晴

(Red Fuji, Fine Wind, Clear Morning,)

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

It is said that in the early hours of the morning in early autumn,

Mount Fuji's silhouette gradually turns red.

It turns red as if powerfully announcing the start of a new day.

In the painting, dawn has now broken, and herring clouds are spreading across the sky.

It is still dark at the top of Mount Fuji, conveying the feeling of dawn,

but the sunlight bathes the mountainside, suggesting the start of a clear, sunny day.

With its extremely bold composition and only a few colors,

this painting overwhelms those who encounter it,

and it is immediately easy to see why it is said to have made

such an impression on Western Impressionist artists.
