The term "Ko-Imari" (Old Imari) originally referred to Hizen porcelains—including Arita ware—shipped from the port of Imari during the Edo period; however, when speaking of the "Ko-Imari style," it specifically denotes the Arita overglaze enamel style known as *Kinrande* (gold-brocade style) or *kinsai* (gold decoration). Emerging during the Genroku era (1688–1704) of the Edo period, this style remains one of Arita's most representative forms to this day. The name *Kinrande* implies a style resembling *kinran*—an expensive textile woven with gold thread. Characterized by deep underglaze blue tones, lavish use of red and gold pigments, and intricate floral patterns covering the entire surface, this style is thought to reflect the prosperous spirit of the Genroku era. Highly decorative in nature, it was greatly admired in Europe—where it was exported—and many such pieces continue to adorn museums and castles around the world.
