At each post station, there was a wholesaler's office where travelers could order horses,

 packhorses, and palanquins.

Travelers paid a fee set by the shogunate, but only traveled

as far as the next post station.

This painting depicts the workers at the Fujieda wholesaler's office.

On the far right is the head of the wholesaler, a Toshiyori, who appears to be

listening to a conversation with a samurai.

 

 

The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hoeido-Ban) were reproduced

by Tokyo traditional woodcut craft Association

 

These traditional woodblock prints were reproduced exactly as the first edition

at Edo-Tokyo Museum have by many of top skilled craftsmen

like a dream team in Japan.
