Utagawa Hiroshige (1797~1858)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

No.027 - 26th Station Kakegawa   掛川 秋葉山遠望

From The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hoeido-Edition)

Kakegawa was a bustling stop on the Akiba Highway, which also led to Shinano.

The subtitle "Akiba Mountain" refers to Akiba Shrine, the shrine dedicated to the god of

fire prevention, but it is far to the north of the "Oike Bridge" in this painting and cannot

 be seen in this composition.

It is thought that Hiroshige was conscious of the pilgrimage to Akiba,

which was popular at the time.
