Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

No.018 - 17th Station Okitsu  興津 興津川

From The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hoeido-Edition)

The people riding on the rendai and the palanquin are sumo wrestlers.

At that time, sumo wrestlers were employed by feudal lords and returned to

their home countries when they made alternate attendance visits to Edo.

For this reason, it seems that there were places where no popular wrestlers

appeared at all.

The Okitsu River is shallow and can be waded across,

but planks are laid across it in the winter when the water temperature drops.

The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hoeido-Ban) were reproduced

by Tokyo traditional woodcut craft Association

These traditional woodblock prints were reproduced exactly as the first edition

at Edo-Tokyo Museum have by many of top skilled craftsmen

like a dream team in Japan.
