From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
The current Sakurada-bori was called Benkei-bori, and the area up to Yotsuya was
broadly called Koji-cho.
This picture shows the residence of the Ii family in Hikone.
Naomasa, the founder of the Ii family's restoration, was a senior vassal of the Tokugawa
family who played an active role in battles all over the country.
His descendant, the elder statesman Naosuke, was assassinated in the
"Sakuradamon Gate Incident" a few years after this picture was made.
One Hundred Famous Views of Edo is a series of ukiyo-e prints
begun and largely completed by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797~1858)
