From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
The Tamagawa Aqueduct was a canal that diverted from the Tama River (Tamagawa)
to supply water to the city of Edo.
It was 40km long and ran underground from partway through.
Cherry trees were planted on the banks to reinforce the canal.
This picture shows the area around present-day Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden,
which was also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot.
One Hundred Famous Views of Edo is a series of ukiyo-e prints
begun and largely completed by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797~1858)
