Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#26 - Sōshū Nakahara (Nakahara in Sagami Province) 相州仲原

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Sagami Nakahara is thought to be present-day Nakahara,

Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture.

At the time it was a busy road leading to pilgrimages to Mt.

Oyama, but as you can see in this illustration, it was a remote area.

The painting depicts traveling merchants and farmers, as if to show the bustle of traffic,

but there is also a man who appears to be on a pilgrimage to Mt. Oyama.

The painting would have been painted in June or July, when people would make

pilgrimages to Mt. Oyama, and the colors overall are bright,

with a late summer to early autumn feel.

What is strange, however, is that Mt. Fuji is covered in snow from the summit to the

middle of the mountain, which is thought to have been Hokusai's intention,

but this is not clear.
