Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#15 - Senju Hana-machi Yori Chōbō no Fuji (Pleasure District at Senju)

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is already covered in snow, and the fields after harvest are depicted covered

in yellow, giving the painting a seasonal feel.

The procession in the foreground is likely a feudal lord's procession returning to his

home province via the Oshu Kaido road, crossing Senju Bridge.

On the far right is a man carrying a palanquin, and behind him are two samurai,

followed by members of a rifle corps. Each is wearing a matching wood-grained haori

coat and walks with a gun slung over their shoulder, but they all look left and right and

 do not appear very coordinated.

Perhaps it is because they are reluctant to leave Edo, or because the buildings in the

 distance are a red-light district.

As if laughing at the procession's restlessness, two women are cheerfully seeing them off

on the side of the road.

This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.

These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
