Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#46 -Minobu-gawa ura Fuji (The back of Fuji from the Minobu river) 見延川裏不二

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Minobu River is another name for the Fuji River that flows near Kuon-ji Temple,

the head temple of the Nichiren sect, to which Hokusai was a lifelong devotee,

and was familiar to pilgrims.

In the past, as this was the highway leading to this famous temple,

it appears to have been a very busy road, and in the painting we can see not only

travelers but also horse drivers and palanquins in a hurry,

giving us a glimpse of that scene.

Hokusai has depicted the terrain as more rugged than it actually is,

and Mount Fuji, with its peak peeking out from between the steep rocks,

looks equally rugged. The Minobu River is also depicted as a rapids with dots of moss,

giving the overall impression of a mountain scene.

In any case, while this painting is the product of imagination,

it is impressive how it approaches the mountain pass with

an unexpected sense of realism.
