Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#43 - Kōshū Isawa no Akatsuki (Dawn at Isawa in Kai Province) 甲州伊沢暁
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
The snow-covered summit of Fuji is already bathed in the morning sun, and the surface
of the river and the opposite bank of the post station are gradually beginning to shine in
the sunlight.
However, before dawn has fully dawned, there is still much traffic in the row of houses,
and the overall painting is done in light ink, beautifully capturing the subtle changes in
early morning brightness and the refreshing air.
Izawa is Isawa-shuku on the Koshu Kaido road, and as it is also the junction to
Mishimagoe, it was said to have been bustling with travelers at the time.
This painting is a bird's-eye view of that early morning scene.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
