Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#37 - Tōkaidō Kanaya no Fuji ( The Fuji from Kanaya on the Tōkaidō) 東海道金谷ノ不二

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

To travel from Shimada-juku on the Tokaido to Kanaya, one had to cross the Oi River,

known as one of the most difficult sections of the river.

Due to shogunate policy, ferries and bridges were not permitted across the Oi River,

so travelers hired porters and crossed the river on foot.

This painting depicts the crossing of the river, and surprisingly,

there are over 100 porters and travelers depicted in the painting.

In the set, along with "Fuji of Katakura Tea Gardens in Suruga,"

this is a unique work that displays meticulous detail and vibrant colors.
