Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#19 - Jōshū Ushibori (Ushibori in Hitachi Province) 常州牛堀

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Joshu Ushibori is what is now Itako-cho (formerly Ushibori-cho) in Itako City,

Ibaraki Prefecture, bordering Lake Kasumigaura.

In the past, it was a route with many ships passing through heading to Kashima,

Choshi, and other places.

The painting is composed as if looking from the pier in the lower right,

and the boat is likely anchored here.

Although half-hidden, it is depicted large, jutting out at an angle.

Reeds grow all around it, giving the silence a sense of bleak melancholy.

It has long been praised as one of the standout pieces in the series

for its composition and color tones.
