Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#44 - Shinshū Suwa-ko (Lake Suwa in Shinano Province) 信州諏訪湖
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
A small shrine can be seen on the shore of Lake Suwa, but it is not clear from
where this view is taken.
However, Takashima Castle can be seen small in the distance,
so it is safe to assume that this is a view from the Shiojiri Pass area.
Hokusai also painted this view from almost the same location in his long,
large-format "Shinshu Suwa Lake Ice Crossing," which he painted around the same time
as this painting, and in a fan painting he published later in life,
so it is possible that he actually visited this place.
The painting is typical of Hokusai, with the shrine and two large trees boldly placed
in the center, but the surface of the lake and the distant landscape are
surprisingly tranquil, making for a pleasant view.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
