Artist

Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#34 - Shojin tozan (Climbing on Fuji)  諸人登山

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

This is the only one in the set that depicts the climbing of Mount Fuji.

The opening to climbing Mount Fuji usually begins on June 1st, and here we see men

making the "Ohachi Mairi" (a pilgrimage to the mountain) while holding kongo walking

sticks, while a large number of climbers can be seen gathering in a rock chamber in the

 background.

This picture is so descriptive that it makes one wonder if Hokusai himself had actually

climbed the mountain, and the mist rising from the rock face makes the picture even

 more realistic.

This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.

These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
