Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#29 - Kōshū Mishima-goe (Mishima Pass in Kai Province) 甲州三嶌越
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Mishima Pass is thought to be the road that crosses Kagosaka Pass from
Kofu and enters Mishima from Gotemba.
Hokusai boldly places a huge, stately tree in the center of the painting, with Mount Fuji
crowned by a cloud behind it, an unexpected and unusual composition.
However, it can be said that the painting is fully successful in expressing the majestic
nature of the deep mountains.
Incidentally, prior to the publication of this painting, in Bunsei 14 (1817),
the seventh volume of the illustrated Hokusai Manga also included a similar illustration
of "Koshu Mishima Pass," but it does not depict the huge tree depicted here.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
