Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#31 - Sunshū Ōno-shinden (Ōno Shinden in the Suruga Province) 駿州大野新田

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

The painting shows farmers heading home with bundles of freshly cut reeds on the backs

 of five oxen.

At the head of the group are two farmer women carrying lush reed leaves on their backs,

and the skillful depiction of the realistic atmosphere of daily life is not to be missed.

The ink and brown tones of the oxen and the reeds on their backs enhance the overall

sense of weight of the painting, and the careful depiction of the figures throughout

makes this a unique piece in the series, but it is interesting to note that there are also

some similarities with the "Hyakunin Isshu Uba ga E Setsu" which began to be published

 later.

Ono Shinden is currently located in the southern part of Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture,

and is said to have been an area with many swamps covered in reeds in the past.
