Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#27 - Soshū umezawanoshō (Umezawa in Sagami Province) 相州梅沢左
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
It is said that Umezawa in Sagami is named after Ninomiya town near Odawara.
It looks like a place deep in the mountains, with the area around towering Mount Fuji
shrouded in mist and not a single house to be seen.
The indigo blue base color also effectively enhances the deep mountain atmosphere,
but the four cranes in the foreground and the flying cranes make
the whole piece very memorable.
The title reads "Sagami Umezawa Sa," but it is now generally believed
that this is a typographical error for "Umezawa Sho."
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
