Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#30 - Sunshū Katakura chaen no Fuji
(The Tea plantation of Katakura in Suruga Province) 駿州片倉茶園ノ不二
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Currently, it is not clear where in Shizuoka Prefecture Katakura Tea Plantation
was located.
However, the painting shows that it was a large-scale tea plantation,
with a wide tea field and nearly 40 workers.
Judging from the detailed sketch, it is likely that Hokusai actually witnessed
the work scene in this tea plantation.
When viewed closely, the painting depicts a surprisingly realistic portrayal of many
women wearing towels and hats picking tea leaves, and the men carrying
the picked tea leaves.
Regardless, this painting can be considered a valuable resource in that it gives a glimpse
into the tea manufacturing process and customs of the time.
This painting is one of several in the set that attempt detailed depictions.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
