Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#24 - Soshū Shichiri-ga-hama (Shichiri beach in Sagami Province) 相州七里浜

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Shichirigahama was a place for Edo commoners to take short trips to Enoshima,

so it was often a favorite subject for ukiyo-e, and often depicted bustling travelers

 passing by.

In light of this trend, this painting is quite different in style.

The painting does not show any people passing by, let alone people,

and shows a desolate landscape with only a few houses visible,

despite being a tourist spot.

The overall indigo color further brings out this atmosphere,

giving the impression that it is more like a landscape painting than a famous place.

Hokusai captures Enoshima from the curved Shichirigahama Beach, and behind it,

Mount Fuji is covered in snow up to its middle, but the only movement in the painting is

the rising clouds and the gently lapping waves, making this a strange and unusual work.
