Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#23 - Tōkaidō Hodogaya (Hodogaya on the Tōkaidō) 東海道保土ヶ谷
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
In his prime, Hokusai produced several sets of paintings along the Tokaido road,
but strangely enough, in none of his paintings of Hodogaya do he depict the hustle
and bustle of the post station, but rather the traffic along the road.
This painting is also titled "Tokaido Hodogaya," but like the Tokaido series,
it captures the traffic along the road.
Here, palanquin carriers, horsemen, and komuso priests are depicted in the foreground,
but the main subject is probably the beauty of Mt. Fuji seen through the pine trees.
This is because "Fuji beyond the pine trees," published in 1835 (Tempo 6),
slightly later than this painting, contains a similarly conceived work,
so this is known.
Incidentally, this location on the road is believed to be Shinanosakabe.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
