Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#28 - Sōshū Hakone kosui (The lake of Hakone in Sagami Province) 相州箱根湖水
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Lake Hakone is today's Lake Ashi. The landscape, devoid of any people or animals,
is depicted flatly as if the whole scene is still.
In the series, it could be said to be a single landscape painting.
However, the effect is that a mysteriously tranquil world spreads across the landscape,
and even if figures or animals the size of a grain of rice were added,
the unique impression that overflows from the canvas would be completely different.
This somewhat stylized painting was, of course, intended by Hokusai.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
