Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#18 - Noboto-ura (Bay of Noboto) 登戸浦

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

In the center of the painting, a large torii gate stands out as the most prominent,
but in contrast, a small white Mt. Fuji can be seen peeking out from it.
Around them, fishermen carrying nets can be seen, as well as men and women engaged
in clamming, and two fishing boats can be seen in the distance,
evoking the calmness of Edo Bay's coastline in the past.

Compositionally, the children playing innocently around the torii gate in the background
are depicted smaller than the adults in the foreground, and the torii gate is similarly
small, suggesting an intention to create a sense of perspective from right to left.
The land continuing from the bottom right curves sharply, but this can also be seen
from the left edge, which is the smallest and most distant,
and it cannot be overlooked that this is how the painting expresses the fact
that this is within Edo Bay.

Most local historians agree that Nobotoura refers to present-day Noboto in Chiba City,
and that the torii gate in the painting is Noborito Shrine (Towatari Shrine).
