#13 - Sumidagawa Sekiya no sato (Barrier Town on the Sumida River) 隅田川関屋の里
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
It is known that Fujiwara Mitsutoshi wrote about this area in his waka poetry,
but Sekiya Village was a general term for the area from Terashima Village on the Sumida
River to the Senju Riverside area.
In the past, it was a remote area covered with grasslands and rice fields,
with few houses, just like in the painting.
Hokusai has placed a large, meandering bank in this idyllic landscape and depicted three
horses galloping with men on their backs,
combining stillness and movement in a single painting.
Even so, the galloping figures on horseback are bent over and
their faces are hidden by their hats, but it is mysterious how they all appear
to be looking straight ahead.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
