Artist

Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#01 - Edo Nihon-bashi ( Nihonbashi bridge in Edo)  江戸日本橋

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

This is a view from the center of Nihonbashi Bridge,

with Chiyoda Castle and Mount Fuji in the distance.

On the bridge, young fish market workers can be seen carrying fish or carrying poles,

and it is clear at a glance that this was a base for distributing fish throughout Edo.

Carts and lumber are also visible, and Hokusai has skillfully depicted

the bustle of the early morning.

Meanwhile, in contrast to the view from the bridge, Chiyoda Castle and Mount Fuji,

which have been hit by an earthquake, are depicted as if they are visible in silence.

This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by

the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.

These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
