#20 -Tōkaidō Shinagawa Goten'yama no Fuji
(Goten-yama-hill, Shinagawa on the Tōkaidō) 東海道品川御殿山ノ不二
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Gotenyama is located near what is now Kitashinagawa 3-chome,
Shinagawa Ward, and cherry tree saplings were transplanted from Yoshino in Washu
during the Kanbun era (1661-73).
It became a famous cherry blossom viewing spot for the common people of Edo,
and along with Asukayama and Sumida Tsutsumi, it was bustling with visitors.
This painting depicts one such cherry blossom viewing scene, capturing scenes of
outings that are no different to today, with families and people enjoying drinking
parties.
The peaceful, vibrant atmosphere of the cherry blossom viewing can be felt not only
from the cherry blossoms in full bloom, but also from the calm Edo Bay and
Mount Fuji peeking through the trees.
