Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#17 - Kazusa no kairo (The Kazusa Province sea route) 上総ノ海路
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
This is a painting of two Go-dairi ships sailing through Edo Bay towards the Boso region.
The Go-dairi ships were mainly loaded with rice and connected Edo and Kazusa;
there were ships that could carry 200, 300, or 500 bales,
and they were active as transport ships until around the end of the Meiji period.
The two Go-dairi ships take up most of the painting,
with only the curving land towards Miura and a small view of Mt. Fuji in the distance,
but this actually conveys the atmosphere of an expansive sea.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
