Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#39 - Tōkaidō Yoshida (Yoshida at Tōkaidō) 東海道吉田
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
The entire screen depicts the front of a teahouse, with Mount Fuji beyond the mist seen
from the back of the shop.
It is as if one is looking at the stage from the theatre seats, and the composition feels
more like a genre painting than a landscape.
This type of composition is rare in ukiyo-e works of the time and is rarely seen elsewhere,
but Hokusai was probably trying to depict a scene in which Mount Fuji was a natural
part of everyday life for ordinary people. In fact, the painting features a wide variety of
characters, including a woman admiring Mount Fuji, a teahouse girl,
a palanquin carrier, and an old man putting on straw sandals.
Incidentally, Yoshida, a post station on the Tokaido, is now Toyohashi City
in Aichi Prefecture.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
