Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#09 - Onden no suisha (Watermill at Onden) 隠田の水車
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Onden is an area around Omotesando in Shibuya Ward today.
Many local historians claim that the Shibuya River near the recently demolished Dojunkai
Apartments is the location of this site.
The painting depicts two women washing dishes in the water falling from a waterwheel,
while behind them a man is carrying a bag and walking towards the wheel.
In this painting, Hokusai focuses his attention on these workers,
the waterwheel, which is drawn with such precision that it is as if it were a blueprint,
and the depiction of water.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
