Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#10 - Shimo-Meguro (Below Meguro) 下目黒

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Two falconers and a farmer are depicted on a country road sandwiched between

hills on either side, with the roofs of several farmhouses painted large in the foreground.

The ordinary scene is made all the more realistic by the warm sunlight and idyllic scenes

 of life.

The small shape of Mount Fuji can be seen between the hills,

and the vast expanse of the sky makes the painting even more impressive.

There are currently several theories as to where Shimomeguro is located,

but as it is a rural landscape with no particular landmarks,

it is unlikely that the painting was created with a specific location in mind.

This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by

the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.

These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
