Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#11 - Koishikawa yuki no ashita
(Tea house at Koishikawa. The morning after a snowfall) 礫川雪ノ旦
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Koishikawa refers to Koishikawa in Bunkyo Ward, and the hillside is thought to
be the area between the front gate of Denzuin Temple and Edogawa Bridge.
The morning after the snowfall is clear and cloudless,
with Mount Fuji's gentle slope bathed in a world of silver.
Several men and women have gathered in a room on the hilltop,
and appear to be holding a banquet while looking down
on the pure white streets of Edo.
Although it is an elegant scene, the three birds flying in the sky
and the woman pointing intently at them add an effective sense of perspective.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
