江都駿河町三井見世略図

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Mitsui Mise was the Echigoya kimono shop in Surugacho (present-day Nihonbashi

Muromachi, Chiyoda Ward) that was opened by Mitsui Takatoshi in 1673.

It flourished and became a large store by focusing on cash transactions without markup.

In ukiyo-e, not only Hokusai's works but also paintings of Surugacho,

this large store is almost always depicted.

In this picture, the large roof, which could easily be mistaken for a temple hall,

is captured from below, looking up, with the famous sign that reads

"Cash, no hanging, kimono goods, braiding, threads."

Hokusai has drawn the left and right roofs large from a low position and placed

a snow-capped Mt. Fuji in the center, composing the picture with three triangles.

On the right roof, the largest of the three triangles, he has drawn three tile craftsmen,

and the tile-throwing craftsmen are posing in the same way as in "Honjo Tachikawa."
