Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#35 - Sunshū Ejiri (Ejiri in Suruga Province) 駿州江尻
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Ejiri is in what is now Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture,
and this landscape is said to have been painted around Ubaga Pond.
The painting shows people walking along a large, meandering bank,
troubled by strong winds.
Here, the wind, which is difficult to depict in a painting, is beautifully expressed
by the man holding down his hat, and by the scattering of paper and hats,
creating a scene that is typical of Hokusai.
This technique had a significant influence on later ukiyo-e artists,
and Hokusai himself painted a similar scene many times in his picture books,
suggesting that this was one of his favorite compositions.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
