Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#40 - Bishū Fujimigahara (Fuji View Field in Owari Province) 尾州不二見原
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
It is believed that Fujimihara in Bishu is today Fujimi-cho, Naka-ku, Nagoya.
It is now impossible to see Mount Fuji from here, but in the past the name of the town
would have allowed one to make out the mountain's shape, albeit small.
The painting boldly depicts a large barrel in the center,
capturing craftsmen hard at work, with a small view of Mount Fuji from inside the barrel.
Due to its unusual concept, typical of Hokusai, this work is commonly known as
"The Barrel Maker's Fuji" and is considered one of the finest works in the series.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
