From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
Inume Pass is a pass located between Inume and Nodajiri on the Koshu Kaido road,
and it is said that from this spot along the Katsura River one could see the majestic shape
of Mount Fuji to the southwest.
The painting evokes the hushed seasons of spring or autumn,
and Hokusai's overall brushwork is relaxed.
A gentle slope continues in the foreground, and tiny travelers and packhorses are
walking slowly and chatting, as if enjoying the mountain scenery.
Behind the slope is a hazy landscape, as if it were a deep valley,
and Mount Fuji is depicted large beyond it, emphasizing the magnificent view.
This is one of the paintings in the series that perfectly captures the sense of the seasons.
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
