Artist

Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#14 - Bushū Senju (Senju, Musashi Province) 武州千住

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

Hokusai deliberately does not depict a bustling post town, but instead depicts the area

around a sluice gate in a canal near the Arakawa River.

Here, two men are engaged in fishing while a farmer passes by them,

leading a horse and gazing at Mount Fuji, creating a tranquil scene.

As in "Sekiya Village on the Sumida River," the faces of the figures

in this painting are hidden by hats or arms. However,

the position of each person's face and the direction of their gaze are designed in

such a way that the viewer is naturally led to imagine it, which has the effect of

drawing attention to even the finer details of the picture.

Still, perhaps it is Hokusai's wit that even the horse's face is obscured by its mane.
