Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#08 - Aoyama enza-no-matsu (Cushion Pine at Aoyama) 青山円座松

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

The Enza Pine is also known as Kasamatsu, and is an old pine tree that stood at Ryuganji,

a Zen temple in Jingumae, Shibuya Ward, today.

It is introduced in guidebooks to famous Edo places as a famous spot on the outskirts of

Edo, so it is likely that many people visited it at the time as

a place of recreation in the area.

In the lower right corner of the painting, three men are seen spreading a felt carpet,

spreading out their lunch boxes and drinking sake together,

and families can also be seen.

Hokusai depicts the domed pine tree as a small hill, and places Mount Fuji large and

 slightly diagonally in the background.

Drifting mist is depicted between them, creating a natural expression of the spacious

space, and the overall color tone is successful in overflowing with the refreshing

 atmosphere of the season.
