Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#03 - Tōto sundai (Sundai, Edo) 東都駿台

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

A large tiled roof is depicted in the lower right of the painting,

and two large trees tower into the sky with an uphill slope to the left.

On the flat land behind them, the interdigitated roofs and snow-capped Mount Fuji are

visible, but the sky is wide, giving the landscape a sense of depth and indicating

that the location is on high ground.

Surugadai is today's Ochanomizu Surugadai, and at the time there was said

to have been a slope called Fujimizaka, which offered excellent views of Mount Fuji.

The river flowing below the cliff in the center of the painting is thought to be the Kanda

 River.

Incidentally, the people travelling up and down the slope are a diverse group,

including farmers, samurai, monks, vendors, and travelers,

but not a single one of them pays attention to Mount Fuji,

and the fact that the scene is entirely male makes one wonder if there was some

 intention on Hokusai's part.
