Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#32 - Sanka Haku U (Rainstorm Beneath the Summit)
(Kaminari Fuji) 山下白雨
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
The steep, towering mountain peak is a beautiful pure white sight from the falling snow,
and the sky is clear and cloudless.
However, midway up, summer clouds can be seen emerging,
and as you descend to the foot of the mountain,
the whole area is black with intense red lightning flashes.
As the title suggests, there is probably a sudden rain shower on the ground.
Hokusai has fully captured the shape of Mount Fuji, which transcends even the weather,
in this single image with his grandiose conception, portraying its unwavering strength.
Hokusai also repeatedly included images based on a similar concept in
"Fuji in a Shower" in the second volume of "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji."
This series of Hokusai’s “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji” has been reproduced by
the Tokyo traditional Woodblock Print Association.
These traditional woodblock prints are produced by a contemporary dream team of many of the top skilled Japanese craftsmen, exactly as was the first edition at Edo-Tokyo Museum
