From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

It is said that many people lost their lives during the Meireki Fire, the largest fire in Edo,

because there was no bridge over the Sumida River.

The shogunate built a bridge over the Sumida River, which had been avoided for

defensive reasons, and the bridge that was completed was Ryogoku Bridge.

In peacetime, the foot of the bridge was lined with many outdoor stalls

and became a entertainment district.
