Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)
Japanese Woodblock Print Name
#45 - Kōshū Kajikazawa (Kajikazawa in Kai Province) 甲州石班沢
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
The title Ishibanzawa is thought to be a misprint of Ishibanzawa,
and is generally seen as Kajikazawa on the Fuji River.
Kajikazawa is known as a rapids where the Kamanashi River and Fuefuki River join,
and the painting is painted as if waves are crashing violently onto the shore.
A fisherman and a child can be seen casting their nets on a rock jutting out over the river,
and in the background there are streaks of mist and only a hazy view of Mount Fuji from
the back.
The figures, who appear to be motionless, are contrasted with the violent water currents
and the slowly moving mist all around, making this a masterpiece that beautifully and
seamlessly captures the atmosphere of grand nature.
