Katsushika Hokusai (1760~1849)

Japanese Woodblock Print  Name

#04 - Tōto Asakusa honganji

( Asakusa Hongan-ji temple in the Eastern capital [Edo] )  東都浅草本願寺

From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji

A large roof is placed on the right side of the painting,

with Edo city and Mount Fuji in the distance behind it.

Hokusai composed the whole picture from a vantage point roughly the same height as

the roof tile craftsmen, creating an interesting contrast between the impressive

geometric shape of the large roof and the smaller, interdigitated roofs of the city.

Also not to be missed is the kite flying in the sky,

which effectively creates the impression of a vast space.

By the way, Asakusa Honganji is Higashi Honganji, which was originally built in Kanda Sudacho, but was moved to its current location in Nishi-Asakusa,

Taito Ward, after a major fire in 1675.
