(Mount Fuji reflects in Lake Kawaguchi, seen from the Misaka Pass in Kai Province)
From Series - Thirty six Views of Mount Fuji
This is a view of Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi from Misaka (Misaka).
There is a single boat in the painting, and apart from two fishermen aboard,
there are no people in the picture.
The surface of the lake on which the boat floats is also waveless, and an indescribable,
mysterious silence pervades the air.
However, two questions have been raised about this painting.
The first is that the position of Fuji and the position of its shadow
reflected on the water's surface are different.
The other is that while the shadow on the water's surface shows a snow-capped peak,
why is there no snow visible on the actual Fuji?
What Hokusai's intention was remains unclear to this day.
